Mathematics

Curriculum Overview 

Mathematics at Claydon High School aims to ensure that all students:

  • Become fluent in the fundamentals of Mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that students develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
  • Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof of mathematical language.
  • Can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routing and non routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

Key Stage 3

We believe the key to success in Mathematics is in the quality teaching of the basic skills at Key Stage 3. Through this students master the key skills of numeracy, algebra and shape. When students join us in Year 7, they are grouped into sets based on their mathematical ability.  Throughout Key Stage 3, there are regular termly assessments to allow for tracking of progress and to ensure students are working in the correct set for them to be challenged. Each of our sets follow an individual curriculum so that all students are challenged whatever their ability. These courses are based around the key areas of number, algebra, handling data, probability, space, shape and measures.

Key Stage 4

Students follow a 3 year GCSE curriculum in Mathematics starting at the beginning of Year 9. There are two tiers of entry in Mathematics: Foundation and Higher.  We use the Edexcel exam board which consists of 3 exam papers - a non calculator paper and two calculator papers; each paper is 1 hour and 30 minutes long.

Students complete written assessments every term so we can monitor every student's progress and make set changes when required. In Year 11 we target those students who need the most support to achieve their target grades. We are very proud of the progress we have made in GCSE Mathematics over the last few years and this has been highlighted by our excellent GCSE results.

CMATS (Claydon’s Most Able and Talented Students)

 
For the more able students in Maths, we take part in the national competition run by UKMT called 'The Maths Challenge'.  You can find revision resources on their website:

A Further Maths GCSE course is offered in Year 11 , which gives students the opportunity to gain an extra GCSE qualification.  This can be a definite advantage on your CV depending on which career path you choose.
